1 tbsp. yeast
3/4 cup warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 tbsp. shortening
2 1/2 - 2 3/4 cups flour

1 egg yolk
1 tbsp. water
sesame or poppy seeds

Directions:
Directions:
Soften yeast in warm water. Add other ingredients. Mix well.
Raise 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Punch down. Divide dough into three equal parts. Roll each part into rope 14 inches long. Place ropes on greased cookie sheet side by side and braid, tucking ends underneath. Then brush with beaten egg and water mixture. Sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top. Let raise 40-50 minutes. Bake 25-30 minutes in 370 degreee oven. If top is browning too quickly, place a sheet of foil on top.

I usually double this recipe to get two loaves, which will fit nicely side by side on a 11 x 17 cookie sheet. Recipe is from dear friend, MaryAnn Giddings.
