Ingredients:  
1/3 c. white sugar, 1/3 c. brown sugar, 1/3 c. margarine, 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 1/3 c. flour, 1/3 tsp. baking soda, a few grains of salt.

Date Filling:
1/3 c. chopped dates, 3 T. water, 3 T. sugar, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 2 T. butter.

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugars and shortening. Add eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients sifted together. Add gradually to shortening mixture. Chill several hours.

Date Filling:
Cook over low heat. Add butter and lemon juice after removed from heat.

Roll chilled dough on a floured cloth about 1/8 to 1/4" thick. Spread with dates. Roll up on a waxed paper and chill several hours. Slice off. Bake at 350 8 - 10 minutes.

I usually triple this batch and it makes about 6 dozen cookies. There are good memories of these cookies prepared for Christmas by Theresa and Mary Jean.
