"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour 13 x 9 pan. Combine in heavy saucepan--caramels and evaporated milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly. (OR-It's easier to microwave this on low power and stir every minute until melted). Keep warm. Combine cake mix, melted butter, and milk. Stir with a spoon until dough holds together. Press 1/2 of the dough into the pan. Reserve remaining dough for topping over all. Bake at 350 for 6 minutes. Sprinkle chocolate chips over baked warm crust. (Add nuts-optional). Whenever I have shared these bars, the recipe is always requested (Milissa). The Lehner family shared this treat at combined family gatherings. Grandma Gevelinger knows them as Edie's Sweeties.
